Morgantown Public Library to upgrade collection to RFID with award-winning Tech Logic CircTRAK

Tech Logic partnered with the Morgantown Public Library branch of the Morgantown Public Library System, serving Monongalia County, WVa., during the conversion of its collection to RFID. Morgantown has purchased RFID tags, tagging and staff station equipment, RFID security gates and the platinum award-winning CircTRAK shelf management system, which locates materials shown in the catalog as lost, missing, trace, claimed returned, and more. The library's goals for this conversion are to improve staff efficiencies and improve shelf management and security. In the future the library plans to offer streamlined RFID patron self-checkout.

The Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC) goes live on ByWater Solutions with Koha support

ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Colorado Library Consortium (CLiC), is now live on Koha with ByWater Solutions! ByWater completed the transition of the library's 550,000 plus holdings and 109 branches from PTFS Koha this week and is providing ongoing support services to the library.

UC San Diego Library receives Mellon Grant to develop new approaches to preserving digital repositories

(February 5, 2019). A one-year, $161,000 grant from the New York City-based Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will fund a joint project to support the effective communication and exchange of data between local and national digital preservation repositories. The project — a collaboration between the UC San Diego Library, UC Santa Barbara, Emory University, Northwestern University and DuraSpace — will design tools that will enable libraries and archives to seamlessly deposit content into distributed digital preservation systems (DDPs), update that content over time and reliably restore content if needed.

Accepting applications for the LITA/Ex Libris Student Writing Award

The Library and Information Technology Association (LITA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), is pleased to offer an award for the best unpublished manuscript submitted by a student or students enrolled in an ALA-accredited graduate program. Sponsored by LITA and Ex Libris, the award consists of $1,000, publication in LITA’s refereed journal, Information Technology and Libraries (ITAL), and a certificate. The deadline for submission of the manuscript is February 28, 2019.

The purpose of the award is to recognize superior student writing and to enhance the professional development of students. The manuscript can be written on any aspect of libraries and information technology. Examples include, but are not limited to, digital libraries, metadata, authorization and authentication, electronic journals and publishing, open source software, distributed systems and networks, computer security, intellectual property rights, technical standards, online catalogs, and universal access to technology.

To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled in an ALA-accredited program in library and information studies at the masters or PhD level, follow the detailed guidelines, and fill out the application form (PDF).
