Hampshire College doubles student use of academic services by centralizing them in library

(February 18, 2018). Student usage of academic services nearly doubled after Hampshire College centralized the services into Harold F. Johnson Library, in a large, newly renovated space starting this past September 2017. The concept behind the new Knowledge Commons was funded by a $1.2 million Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant awarded to the library in December 2015.

Cambridge University Libraries go live with Ex Libris Alma and Primo solutions

Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, announced the successful implementation of the Ex Libris Alma library services platform and Primo® discovery and delivery solution at the University of Cambridge. The Alma and Primo solutions will be an integral part of services at multiple Cambridge libraries.

(February 14, 2018). he Corporate Committee for Library Investment (CCLI), an organization of more than 90 U.S. corporations united to support federal library funding, believes that the proposed cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) damage critical economic and educational infrastructure. We urge Congress to restore full federal funding for America's libraries in the FY2019 budget.

Dark Archive to protect 600 terabytes of ProQuest data

(February 13, 2018). ProQuest has launched a new initiative for the long-term archival storage of its digital content, creating a “dark archive” that protects the investments of its library customers. The ProQuest SAFE (Secure Archives ForEver) service will ensure preservation and access to content purchased by customers. The SAFE service will launch using Amazon Glacier, the long-term backup and data-archiving resource from Amazon Web Services, chosen for its ability to ingest and protect ProQuest's 600 terabytes of data. ProQuest will complete the first phase of the SAFE implementation by populating the dark archive with ebook content in 2018 and will support ongoing deposits.

EBSCO is back with three $100,000 solar grants available to libraries worldwide in 2018

(February 12, 2018). As part of our commitment to ”Going Green,” we want to encourage libraries to reevaluate their own environmental footprints. In 2016, we introduced the EBSCO Solar Grant and to date we have given nearly half a million dollars to libraries looking to install solar arrays on their campuses. This year, EBSCO Solar will fund three $100,000 grants.

BIBFRAME Expectations for ILS tenders and 2018 European BIBFRAME Workshop

(February 11, 2018). In September 2017 38 Europeans from 16 European countries (and 3 presenters from US) gathered for the first European BIBFRAME Workshop at the German National Library, Frankfurt. The workshop discussed the barriers for implementation of BIBFRAME in breakout sessions. The lack of interest and implementations from the vendors of ILS were seen as a key issue. As a follow-up of the 2017 workshop, the organizer group of the 2018 workshop has developed BIBFRAME Expectations for ILS tenders.

Multnomah County Library selects SirsiDynix Symphony

(February 9, 2018). Multnomah County Library has finalized a contract with SirsiDynix to implement the company's Symphony integrated library system. The ILS comprises the backbone of a library's technology environment, tying together transactions and data about patron checkouts and holds, ordering and cataloging new materials and it powers what patrons see on the library's website.

The Curry County Library Network goes live on ByWater Solutions Koha support

ByWater Solutions, an open source community contributor and America's forefront provider of Koha support, announced today that the Curry County Library Network, of Curry County, Oregon. is now live on Koha with ByWater Solutions! ByWater completed the transition of the library's 170,000 plus holdings from TLC to the already existing and ByWater supported Coos County Library System Catalog. The library network's five libraries joined the Coos County shared catalog, bringing the total number of libraries up to 17 and the total number of combined holdings to over 500,000.

EBSCO Information Services announces next round of Solar Grant Submissions

EBSCO Information Services will continue its commitment to helping libraries with sustainability efforts by bringing back an enhanced version of its EBSCO Solar grant program for 2018. As part of the EBSCO Solar initiative, EBSCO is soliciting grant applications to give libraries the opportunity to “go green” by funding solar installations. EBSCO has expanded the program for 2018 and is making three $100,000 grants available to applicants.

OCLC Research and ALISE name recipients of 2018 Library and Information Science Research Grants
